The mistress, René Seyssaud (1866-1952) The mistress, large oil on canvas signed lower left, vertical quadrilateral rectangle shape, the subject is a young woman, represented naked, sitting on the edge of a bed removing her shoe in a pose that is as natural as it is voluptuous. Dimensions; chassis: width 81cm, height 100cm – frame width 93cm, height 112cm. René Seyssaud was born in 1867 in Marseille. He studied at the school of fine arts in this city before going to Paris to continue his studies and work. He began exhibiting his paintings at the Salon du Champ de Mars in 1892. Seyssaud was influenced by the Fauvist movement, characterized by a bold use of color. His painting is characterized by broad brushstrokes and bright colors. He was one of the founding members of the Marseille school in 1900. Seyssaud spent most of his life painting landscapes of Provence. Lavender fields, olive trees and hilltop villages were motifs that he particularly liked. His paintings have also often represented the shores of the Mediterranean but not only...
