"Bartak : “the Beautiful Andalouse 1935”"
Bartak (Czech School 20th century): “La Belle Andalouse 1935”, oil on canvas 116 x 81 cm, mounted in a beautiful sober original blackened oak frame 126 x 90 cm. Two very well done restorations and not visible from the front. If the temptation to identify the painter with Ludvik Bartak (1857-1921) is great (some auctioneers have actually done so), the presence here of the date excludes this hypothesis. This typically Art-Deco Andalusian Belle, in an outing outfit with her mantilla placed on the immense comb holding the bun and wearing a Manila “manton” shawl sumptuously embroidered with flowers and birds of paradise, is sure of her beauty with her clever makeup, her gold earrings and her lock of hair... If we can't help but think of Picabia's painting of the same subject, the treatment of it is extremely original with the mantilla treated in relief , real lace of painting and powerfully decorative.
