"Vincent Médart Aimé Boyer (1797-1860) Marine Commissioner Port Royal Martinique Edouard Sain"
Portrait of Vincent Médart Aimé BOYER (1797-1860). Commissioner of the Navy at Port Royal in Martinique by Edouard SAIN (1830-1910). Edouard SAIN was born in Cluny on March 13, 1830. Edouard Sain lived in Valenciennes from the age of 8, his father having been appointed collector of indirect contributions there. He attended college then entered the city's Academies in the class of the painter Julien Potier. In 1847 he left for Paris and reported to the Picot workshop. In 1853, he competed in the Grand Prix for painting ("Christ chasing the merchants from the Temple"). He left the School and found subjects according to his heart in the life of the humble, in particular multiplying the paintings presenting chimney sweeps. In 1863, he left for Italy where his inspiration encountered, in the characters from the countryside surrounding Rome or Naples, endearing subjects "brought together as in a ballet" (G. Schürr, "Les Petits maîtres...", III, 1976) . Regularly participating in the Salon from 1853 to 1910, Edouard Sain was a successful painter who exhibited his works not only in France but also abroad. His portraits are numerous and we can cite among his compositions the "Wedding in Capri", "the Round of the Chimney Sweeps" or the "Pilgrimage to the Madonna of Ancri". He never broke with the town of Valenciennes where he had received his first artistic training and where he had friends.
