The longevity of this decorative theme goes back so far that we forget that the first rhinoceros carrying an obelisk on its back was the work of Jean Goujon in the 16th century! It was installed opposite the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on rue Saint-Denis, in Paris. Dürer's Rhinoceros is no stranger to this success because the proofs of the print made in 1515 were successful until the 17th century. After that, the motif was put aside for a while before neoclassicism gave it back its nobility, and even more so the historicism of the end of the 19th century.
These two rhinoceroses sculpted in portor marble each carry an obelisk of the same porphyry as the base decorated with friezes and motifs in gilded bronze. The ensemble is in perfect condition.
