Persian rugs are usually named after their region of origin. So, here, there is a Semnan carpet, close to the town of Ghoum.
You will notice its patterns identical to the Ghoum rugs, so-called Boteh patterns gracefully represented in garlands.
It is said that the original Persian droplet design - the Boteh or buta - was a representation of a floral spray combined with a cypress tree, a symbol of life and eternity. The seed-like shape is also believed to represent fertility and has connections to Hinduism.
