Object description :

"The Halt Of Working Horses, Signed Michael Therkildsen"
Oil on canvas representing the halt of the laborers and their horses. Monogrammed lower right M TH and dated 1887. Painting presented at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 in Paris under number 158 (label on the back) Michael Hans Therkildsen (1850-1925). The son of a peasant, he showed artistic talents very early on, which allowed him to enter the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Taking advantage of his real knowledge of the rural world, he made it the sole theme of his work. He undertook study trips to France (in 1880 and 1880), to Luxembourg where he was specifically interested in the animal painting of Constant Troyon or Charles Emile Jacque and to Italy where he discovered the luminosity of the sky and landscapes. You can find his works in Copenhagen (Staten Museum for Kunst, Hirschsprung Museum, Chateau D'Amalienborg..). In 1887, he was rewarded with the Thorvalsen Medal, a coveted honor awarded by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and thanks to which he was selected to be part of the Danish delegation to the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
