Beautiful and elegant portrait of Madame Helena van Heuvel, oil on canvas, signed lower right by the painter Nicolas Maes, born in Dordrecht in January 1634 and died in Amsterdam on December 24, 1693. Dutch painter known for his intimate genre scenes and his portraits. Dutch school, 17th century. Dimensions: h.44.5 cm x l.33.5 cm. A beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame completes the decor. Private collection. In good condition. Nicolas Maes was in Amsterdam, between 1648 and 1653, a student of Rembrandt who retained a notable influence on him for a long time, particularly with regard to chiaroscuro. Returning to Dordrecht in 1653 until 1673, when he abandoned the manner of Rembrandt to devote himself to interior scenes. He subsequently devoted himself to portraits which were very popular in Holland during the second half of the 17th century. He became a sought-after portrait painter. After a trip to Antwerp, he came under the influence of Antoine van Dyck. He ended his career in Amsterdam where he returned in 1673.
