"Holy Carved Wood, Circa 1500"
Saint sculpted in the round, originally in an entombment group. Similarly Marie Salomé or Marie Cleophas. The face is not in pain unlike the Blessed Virgin and the ointment pot is not present (Mary Magdalene). The face is broad with a thin mouth and almond-shaped eyes and slightly inclined (towards the tomb of Christ). The hands with long fingers are crossed on his chest. The coat appears heavy with thick pleats and a flat return at the bottom. Beautiful proportions and great sobriety in its expression deserve our full attention. France, Franche-Comté / Burgundy, around 1500.
