The horse's coat shines, the mane is combed: according to her habit, it is likely that Clarys painted a competition animal.
The work is in very good condition, without restorations and clean. It is sold unframed, given its size. The original frame, imposing and heavy, is nevertheless available at the gallery (contact us). It is signed and dated lower left.
The artist
This painting is the work of the famous Belgian animal painter Alexandre Clarys. After his training at the Brussels Academy, Alexandre Clarys specialized in painting scenes with dogs and/or horses. This Belgian artist has made an international name for himself with his portraits of animals in a realistic style. Clarys painted many horses and hunting dogs for wealthy racing and hunting enthusiasts. In addition, the artist painted pastoral and equestrian scenes, which include full-length profile portraits of some horses, as well as rural and urban depictions featuring groups of horses. In many of his canine and equestrian works, the titles of the works reveal the names of the champion subjects.
The artist worked primarily in oil painting, with occasional forays into watercolor and poster engraving, probably by lithography.
Clarys regularly exhibited his works in the Salons of Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. Today, the artist's work is exhibited in several museums, notably in Antwerp, Brussels, Ixelles, Liège, Ostend and Tienen.
