Biography:

LENG Hong, born in Shanghai in 1955, is a Chinese artist. He studied fine arts at the Shanghai Theater Academy in the 1970s, initially a painter and teacher, he left for France in the 1980s, became interested in Western painting and found another style.

He immersed himself in the schools of painting of the 20th century and earlier Western schools, including that of the Italian Renaissance which conquered him. Leng Hong is still a professor at the College of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. Leng Hong has developed a style that transcends time and place. The artist adds the serenity so well transmitted by classical Chinese art. The outlines of buildings, or objects, but also of characters, seem to be cut through the impasto of various layers of paint, can be seen as blurred drawings, deliberately represented from different angles, using the same techniques used by Picasso in his cubist portraits.
For his oils, Leng Hong mixes techniques and adds a marble powder which illuminates his colors sometimes with red-brown, sometimes with blue-green and often in very large formats. In his watercolors, Leng Hong adopts a technique dating back to the 5th century, monochrome washes, in which the gradations of intensity of the ink make it possible to obtain a multiplicity of effects, while purifying and simplifying the color.

Leng Hong exhibits all over the world both solo and in groups, notably in Canada where he has lived for around twenty years. (And there, he also paints the St. Lawrence River which flows under his window and invades his “villages from another era” with mists when it comes to watercolors.)
At the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, at the Pau Museum, at the Château d'Issan, in France, at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, at the Shanghai Art Museum, his exhibitions follow one another and are not alike. His works are in the collections of the Hangzhou Museum, Suzhou Museum, Liu Haisu Art Museum, Shanghai. his works illustrate the front covers of books published by major houses and have been presented several times during French-speaking and Chinese TV shows. Leng Hong regularly appears in the portfolios of auction houses such as Sotheby in Taipei, Arcurial in Shanghai. Still in 2019 and for 20 years, Leng Hong sees his works appearing in prestigious exhibitions in China. Leng Hong works and lives between Canada and China…and sometimes in Europe.
