About the Salon of 1860 in Montpellier, Beaux-Arts, p. 651: “[…] The one which has been most noticed, and we will add which deserved to be noticed, is the charming fantasy of Mr. Rahoult, from Grenoble (n°225), entitled Les Saltimbanques. This scene of popular mores is rendered with infinite wit and truth. The author has forgotten nothing, not even the good gendarme, this devoted protector of our people. There are certain paintings which, without being of the first order, have the privilege of attracting the sympathies of all, without distinction between those who bring technical knowledge to their examination and those who are guided only by their good taste. Mr. Rahoult must be placed in the category of happy painters, because his small composition of Saltimbanques is one of those which obtained unanimous votes during the Exhibition. […] If Mr. Rahoult could be placed in the class of regional exhibitors, we would not hesitate, Gentlemen, to suggest that you classify him as the first for the genre painting; but Mr. Rahoult is from Grenoble, so he is outside the regional competition. [...] »
