Henri Gonnard (1834-1912) oil on canvas 19th century View of the Pont d'Avignon Superb view of the Palais des Papes and the old bridge of Avignon This view is pre-Raphaelist in the warm tones of southern France In the foreground is finds a sandy bank topped by a wooded embankment which is somewhat reminiscent of Bertin's work in composition and colors. Following the Rhône we discover the Palais des Papes with the warm lighting of a late summer day Henri Gonnard succeeded in his composition represented a bridge which would eventually be finished Canvas signed lower right d canvas: 55 x 32.5 cm d with frame: 64 x 42.2 cm Henri Gonnard: Jean Henri Gonnard was born in 1834 in Montbrison , he is the son of Claude Gonnard, draper merchant then banker. He was a student at Verrières then at the Argentière seminary. He considered entering the Beaux-Arts in Lyon, but his family dissuaded him. He then joined the General Treasury of Saint-Etienne. In 1866 he became secretary at the town hall of Saint-Etienne. In 1867 he married the daughter of a notary in Pontaumur. From 1872 to 1886, he was the curator of the Saint-Etienne Museum of Art and Industry. In 1877 he became an Academy Officer. He was put into early retirement on April 1, 1886. He then devoted himself to his passions, history, drawing and painting. He died in 1912 in Saint-Etienne. He leaves his name to the street which connects the museum to the former School of Fine Arts.
