"Napoleon Law] Dard - French Civil Code. Eo In-4."
DARD (Henri-Jean-Baptiste). French Civil Code with Indicative Notes of Roman Laws, Customs, Ordinances, Edicts and Declarations which relate to each article or Conference of the Civil Code with ancient Laws followed by a General Table of Contents in alphabetical order. In Paris, at JA Commaille, 1805. A very strong theft. in in-4 format (267 x 212 mm) of 2 ff. n.fol. and 640 pp. Contemporary binding in full brown marbled sheepskin, cold fillet framing the covers, ribbed spine decorated with bold cold fillets, set of small oblique gilt fillets on the nerves, double gilt framing boxes, large gilded fleuron decoration, seedlings of small golden florets, old-red morocco title piece, golden title, golden palette at the tail. Rare first edition. ''The importance of the Civil Code, the great interest it inspires, have determined it to appear in different forms. Eager publishers competed with the official editions; but they, like them, only present the text of the law. Several jurisconsults have sought to be of service to the public, by accompanying the Law with more or less erudite commentaries. Larger than a simple edition, simpler than all the Commentaries which have appeared, but surer in its operation and more interesting in its subject, this work aims to demonstrate that most of the provisions of the Civil Code were drawn from the ancient Laws, mainly Roman. The work that we are publishing with Notes on the articles taken from the old Legislation will put each person within reach of knowing the true meaning of the main provisions of the Civil Code, going back to their source. The Table of Contents, more extensive than those which have appeared, will serve in a way as a reasoned Dictionary of the provisions of the Civil Code.'' Many blank sheets have been interleaved in this copy, encouraging note-taking. Dramart, Bibliographie du Droit civil, 37 (quoting only an 1827 edition by Warée and Ponthieu, which he describes as ''rare'') - Quérard II, La France littéraire, p. 390 - Poumarède, From the end of customs to the survival of local uses. Discreet scattered superficial alterations affecting the binding. The first backguard as well as the half-title has a tear in the left margin. Some foxing in the body of work. Otherwise, good condition. Rare.
