Object description :

"Kilonda Ceremonial Ax - Democratic Republic Of Congo - First Half Of The 20th Century"
Kilonda ceremonial or ceremonial headdress
Songye culture, Democratic Republic of Congo
First half of the 20th century
Wood, iron and copper
Height: 39 cm; length: 22.5 cm

The triangular blade is made of openwork iron with two incised anthropomorphic faces on either side and a knot with a twisted end. It is held in a straight wooden handle wrapped in nailed copper inserts.

The forging of the blade distinguishes it from battle axes and makes this weapon a prestigious object that can sometimes be considered as a bargaining chip.
