Signed lower right: "P. Canonica".
Pietro Canonica was born in Moncalieri, on the outskirts of Turin, in 1869 in a newly united Italy. He quickly became highly celebrated and in demand among the Italian and European aristocratic classes, and was in fact called to various foreign courts to paint mainly portraits or commemorative monuments. Success continued to smile on the sculptor, so much so that a solo exhibition was dedicated to him at the Venice Biennale in 1912 with seventeen works on display, including L'abisso (The Abyss), in which ideal beauty unites with the most secret motions of the soul.
