Mica" is an almost translucent, slightly greenish mineral with a smooth surface made up of shiny layers that can be separated from each other with the tip of a knife.
Formica was invented in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. It was first used as an electrical insulator in sockets, replacing the mineral mica.
That's the origin of its name: "for" "mica", i.e. to replace Mica.
How is it made?
It is made from layers of kraft paper impregnated with a resin that is pressed together under the effect of heat. This fabric is then coated with melamine resin, which covers the wood of the furniture like a veneer.
Around 1930, this new material proved revolutionary for kitchen furniture. It was easy to manufacture, shock-resistant, hard-wearing and, above all, easy to clean.
