It dates from the last quarter of the 18th century (or the first quarter of the 19th).
BLADE: This is a military type saber blade, probably made in Solingen. It has a fuller along the back, which continues to the counter-cutting edge. Counter-edged on the last 17 cm near the tip.
Length of the blade 61.5 cm, width near the guard = 3.4 cm, thickness near the guard = 6.5 mm Some oxidation stains
GUARD: it is a strong brass guard with two quillons. Presence of a sort of bowl intended for sealing when the weapon is in its sheath
HILT: it is made of deer antler, as is classic for a hunting saber. Two rivets secure the plates to the tang. A white metal ring, probably silver, separates the grip part from the monster head.
The head represents a screaming monster, the mouth filled with fangs wide open, and the tongue sticking out. A kind of hat covers the monster. On the top of the “hat” is a embossed brass plaque depicting 3 oak leaves and two acorns.
SCABBARD: It is made of sewn leather, with brass cap and button. Although the scabbard fits the blade perfectly, it appears that the brass scabbard entrance is a replacement since it is slightly too large to fit into the bowl of the guard.
Old leather repair, edge side towards the tip of the scabbard.
Beautiful, unusual object, which will fit naturally into a collection of hunting weapons, or into a cabinet of curiosities, for the representation of the monster...
