Cast bronze, chased and gilded
H. 26 ; diameter 13.5cm
Empire period, circa 1810
The candlesticks rest on a circular base decorated with flowers in a gilt bronze latticework, the rim decorated with a garland of ivy leaves. The tapering shaft is finely decorated with friezes of twisted pearls alternating with a register of ivy garlands; the candleholder has the same decoration. The whole can be dismantled into five separate parts.
Thomire-Duterme & Cie:
The candlestick was designed by Pierre-Philippe Thomire. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris has the design and a pair of candlesticks, whose shape is identical to ours but whose decoration has a variant. Thomire and Duterme joined forces in 1804, taking over the business of Daguerre et Lignereux. Under the name Thomire, Duterme et Cie, they became the largest suppliers of gilded bronze, employing up to seven hundred workers. Thomire experienced significant growth. He was the first bronzemaker to take part in the 1806 Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie, at which he was awarded a gold medal.
