Alexandre Nestor Nicolas Robert born in Trazegnies (Belgium) on February 27, 1817 and died in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Brussels) on December 13, 1890, is a Belgian painter and portraitist also specialized in religious and historical subjects. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium (Classe des Beaux-Arts). Student of François-Joseph Navez at the Brussels academy. He traveled, in order to improve his skills, in the company of Jean-François Portaels, to Paris, around 1842-18432, then to Italy. He stayed in Rome from 1846 to 1849. In 1860 he married Alice Madou (1836-1900)5, the eldest daughter of the painter Jean-Baptiste Madou. In 1864 he became a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, of which he became director in 1888. He had Rémy Cogghe (1854-1935) and Albert Delstanche (1870-1941), grandsons of Jean-Baptiste Madou, as students. He painted portraits of members of the Royal Family (For the Belgian royal family, he painted the portrait of Léopold, Duke of Brabant and Count of Hainaut, only son of King Leopold II. At the home of the Count and Countess of Flanders are two full-length portraits representing Prince Baudouin of Belgium (1869-1891) and his sister Henriette. In 1870 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Belgium. He won a Rome Prize. He was an officer of the he order of Léopold and a street in Trazegnies bears his name.
