Presentation of a magnificent Devez vase by Camille Trutié de Varreux
We are pleased to present to you an exceptional vase signed Devez, a remarkable work by Camille Trutié de Varreux (1872-1942). This glass vase features an acid-etched decoration representing thistles and boats, testifying to the artistic excellence of its creator and the crystal factory that produced it.

Historical and artisanal context
Few documents exist on Camille Trutié de Varreux, but her time at the Cristallerie de Pantin “Stumpf, Touvier, Viollet & Cie” remains notable. Founded in 1851 by E.S. Monot, the crystal factory was transferred to Pantin in 1855, to 84 rue de Paris. In 1903, its depot was located at 66 rue d’Hauteville in Paris. The crystal factory underwent several changes of name, becoming “Monot et Cie”, then “Monot Père et Fils et Stumpf”, and finally “Stumpf, Touvier, Viollet & Cie” after Monot withdrew in 1889.

In 1907, Camille Trutié de Varreux was appointed artistic director, co-directing with Viollet. They introduce a new artistic direction, focusing on multi-layered, acid-etched glass pieces. Before 1914, the Cristallerie de Pantin produced a limited quantity of Art Nouveau style works, engraved and signed Thiaucourt, attributed to Émile Thiaucourt, a talented glassmaker and engraver.
Description of the vase
This Devez vase stands out for its elegant dimensions, with a height of 19.5 cm. It is decorated with motifs of thistles and boats, exposed with acid, a technique which gives depth and texture to the work. The floral design of the thistles and the marine details of the boats reflect the artistic mastery of Camille Trutié de Varreux and the influence of Art Nouveau.

The crystal factory closed at the start of the First World War and reopened in 1919, producing industrially pressed molded glass. In 1920, the Société Industrielle de Verrerie took over the company, but it struggled to survive without investment and modernization, finally closing in 1925. The crystal factory was put up for sale in 1931 and acquired by the Paris-Pantin company, which built establishments there. schools around 1940.
