"Watercolor After Jan Dirksz Both, Card Players In Front Of Ruins In Italy."
Very beautiful watercolor representing card players sitting in front of ruins in Italy. Our watercolor was made from a painting by Jan Dirksz Both, known as “Both from Italy”. Sold presented under a Marie-Louise. Note a tiny, barely visible tear, towards the three-quarter top edge (see photo). The original painting was produced around 1638-1641, it measures 58.5 cm x 50 cm, it was acquired in 1858 by the Museum of Fine Arts in Nîmes. Jan Both "known as Both d'Itali" is a Dutch painter and engraver born in 1618 and died in 1652. He apprenticed with his brother Andries at Abraham Bloemaert then went to France and Italy. He created numerous paintings with his brother, painting backgrounds, trees and landscapes. Interested in the aesthetics of Antiquity, Jan Both does not hesitate to represent scenes of daily life in settings of ruins (as evidenced by our watercolor that we present to you).
