In the background we can see a bouquet of flowers and some old books, suggesting that he may be a man of letters or at least an intellectual from the Age of Enlightenment. The character with a delicate and kind face stands out from the background which is a green curtain (we can see pompoms on the right side). François Thomire is an artist who had particular attention to the detail of lace as in this composition. The bouquet of flowers is also a decoration that the artist appreciated and which is found in many of his paintings.
The work also bears a label at the back on the frame indicating: "Mr Dupuis de Sauvescure fils". It could thus be the representation of the President of the Court of Appeal of Pau (South-West).
Dimensions with its 18th century frame: 160 cm x 113 cm.
Dimensions without frame: 144 cm x 97 cm.
The painting is in good condition. It was cleaned by a restorer. It is still on its original canvas.
