Young farmer with her livestock
A representation of a servant with her oxen and sheep resting on the edge of a river in a pre-Alpine setting, painted with a finely nuanced and virtuoso application of colors. With its masterfully captured luminous atmosphere and vivid depiction of animals, the motif and style are typical of Mali's work. The artist, who worked in Munich from 1858, was inspired by Constant Troyon during a study trip to Paris in 1865 to devote himself to animal painting. Mali later became a pioneer in plein air painting. With his painter friend Anton Braith, he is considered one of the most important German animal painters of the second half of the 19th century; the Braith Mali museum in Biberach is dedicated to them. Oil/canvas, lined. R. lower sign. with the place name Munich and dated 1896(?);
