"France 13th Century : “the Shepherd”"
France 13th century: “The Shepherd”, direct-cut sculpture in very hard sandstone 26 x 35 x 14 cm. Previous origin: Pyrenees. A little missing on the nose, perhaps formerly varnished. Formerly sealed with mortar, it was released with a hammer and chisel without, fortunately, causing any damage. Representing a man carrying a lamb on his shoulders, it could either be an allegory of the Good Shepherd, or a shepherd of Adoration or, quite simply, a representation of a profession... Its structure shows that it was intended to be seen from below, at least from a slight angle, which would probably make it an ornamental element on a door tympanum.
