Bronze with nuanced patina Lion devouring an antelope Signed G.GARDET for Georges GARDET Founder Société des bronzes de Paris Height: 27cm Total width: 53cm Georges GARDET (1863 - 1939) Son of sculptor and brother of sculptor Joseph Francois GARDET (1861-1891) . Georges Gardet entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he became a student of Aimé Millet (1819-1891) and Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910). He quickly revealed himself to have great skill in creating animal subjects which would remain his favorite themes. Georges Gardet participated in the Paris Salon at the age of twenty and achieved his first success in 1891 with Drame au desert. He received numerous orders from wealthy clients for “portraits” of their pets or to decorate their garden or home. He creates plasters often translated into bronze as well as marbles. Some of his works will be the subject of replicas in Sèvres biscuit. Georges Gardet became an officer of the Legion of Honor in 1900. A member of the Academy of Fine Arts and the Society of French Artists, he is considered one of the greatest artists of the French school of animal sculptors.
