Signed and dated “F Roux 1839” Dimensions at sight: 40 x 56 cm (framed under glass) Biography: François Joseph Frédéric Roux belongs to a Marseille dynasty of marine painters and hydrographers. In the family workshop, his father taught him pictorial art as well as shipbuilding and navigation which would be useful to him in his boat portraits. He continued his apprenticeship in Horace Vernet's workshop in Paris. Around 1830, he established himself in the city of Le Havre as a hydrographer and painter.
