"Onyx And Bronze Fireplace Set, Stamped A. Gapaillard, Art Deco – 1920"
Superb fireplace set, in honey onyx contrasted with brown onyx slabs and turquin blue marble, including a clock and two cassolettes. The rectangular clock is stamped by the watchmaker Alexandre Gapaillard, founder of the Grand Comptoir National d'horlogerie in 1850 in Rennes. The golden dial is graduated in Arabic numerals at the hours. The facade is decorated with two gilded bronze motifs of Egyptian women carrying an offering. This timepiece features a bronze sculpture representing a draped woman holding a parrot in her left hand. The mechanical pendulum movement is stamped with the number 593. The cassolettes, also rectangular, are each topped with a cavity to accommodate a square candle holder or small objects. Each piece in this set rests on bronze ball feet. The combination of onyx, marble and bronze, as well as its ornamentations, make this fireplace surround a work faithful to the Art Deco movement. ******** Period: 1920 Clock in excellent condition.
