Object description :

"Pewter Wine Pitcher - Etampes, 18th Century"

Pewter PITCHER, shouldered shape, oblique plinth foot, straight cup and S-shaped thumbscrew with molded crest.
Control mark overlapped by the mark of Louis CLERET, received master before 1756: crowned hammer / LC / E.
Gauging countermark on the inside back: ST.C (For "at the gauge of St Cloud"?).
Overall height: 22.5 cm.
ETAMPES, Second third of the 18th century

Curious unlisted countermark of measurement.
Superb condition.
Let us recall in passing that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those which were used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be controlled periodically by the royal or ecclesiastical power to ensure "good measure" for the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was little applied and the pitchers which bear gauging hallmarks are very rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to establish itself due to the resistance to change shown by users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measurements would end up replacing the pitchers which presented, it is true, a variety of interesting shapes characteristic of their place of manufacture, but also an infinity of different gauges from one city to another and often even from one village to another, however close they may be.
