Finely carved ivory sculpture, depicting a group of 13 oni in this row, resting on its wooden base, Japanese work, Meiji period (1868-1912). (two onis glued together at the base of the feet, see photos) Oni (鬼?) are a kind of yōkai, creatures of Japanese folklore, present in Japanese arts, literature and theater.
