Joan Vives Maristany was born in San Feliù de Guixols (Girona) on February 10, 1901. As a teenager he met the painter Eliseo Meifren on the beach in Sitges. Seeing the boy's interest in this artistic practice, Meifren gave him drawing and painting lessons. From this period (between 1916 and 1922) Maristany's first works have been preserved. Young Joan was attracted to South America and decided to leave in 1925. He took a boat which passed through Barcelona, Cadiz, La Palma, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires in 56 days. During the trip he painted numerous works, even going so far as to exhaust all the supports he had taken with him. He would eventually paint on wooden champagne crate panels. He quickly made a place for himself in the artistic atmosphere of Buenos Aires. But in 1930 his life changed and he had to live in hiding. On February 20, 1932 he left the Castelar hotel accompanied by an elegant woman and the two were caught up in riots. Trying to get away from danger, he headed towards another street where he was accidentally hit by a tram and died instantly at the age of 31.
