"France Early 19th C .: “the Loop Child”"
French school, early 19th century: “Curled Child”, miniature on ivory 5 8 cm excluding bail bearing the label of Jules Berville in Paris on the back. The frame has certainly fallen, causing a movement of the horizontal crosspieces, visible under the tackle, as well as a missing one in the lower right corner. This delightful miniature seems to me a little older (circa 1815) than the label on the back which is from 1833/1835 would suggest, but this framer being also a dealer in paintings and drawings which he also rented, it is possible that it was affixed to old objects acquired by the store. The child, of indeterminate sex, long hair with curls being worn by both girls and boys at that age, reminds me of the portraits of the King of Rome, the son of Napoleon and Marie-Louise, but without certainty.
