Auguste Durst was born into a bourgeois family in the Paris region. He divides his days between Paris and Normandy, where he has a house in St Vaast d'Équiqueville, near Dieppe. Self-taught, he attended Ernest Hébert's studio at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes français in 1868. Throughout his life, he exhibited in numerous salons in France and abroad. Auguste Durst enjoyed fame during his career, benefiting from purchases by the State and by collectors. He received the Legion of Honor in 1902.
His works are today preserved in numerous public and private collections in France and abroad such as the cities of Pau, Paris, Saumur, Roubaix, Toulouse, Tours and Saint -Louis (USA), Amsterdam, Bonn and London.
