Pair of candlesticks or torches
Gilt bronze, three parts
Paris, last quarter of the 18th century
Dimensions : H. 17 (cm.)
A pair of candlesticks or torches known as "de poing" or "de toilette" resting on a circular base with an acanthus frieze, the shaft in the form of a column with filleted flutes and asparagus stems. The wicks are decorated with a string of pearls.
This format has many names. They were used for washing and, thanks to their compact size, were easy to move around at night. They were often placed on small pieces of furniture such as dressing tables or bedside tables. However, they could also be used for decorative purposes, for example as decoration for a writing desk.
Condition report: minor wear
