"Lega Grade Mask Lukungu Turtle Democratic Republic Of Congo"
Rare large Lega mask called grade in turtle shell. Democratic Republic of Congo . Probably from the Shabunda region, it is a rank mask which indicates the high status of the person who possesses it, it is made to be exhibited as a sign of authority during certain ceremonies. The turtle is an animal revered by the Luba, it is a slow animal which is considered to be wise, it faces dangers peacefully by protecting itself and what's more, it lives a long time. These masks are rare, this one is also large and has superb geometric engraving work, which makes it a fairly exceptional mask. Probably around 1950. Some small holes in the shell, height 36 cm.
