Object description :

"Case And Wax Seal Of One Bishop, (carcassonne?) Polished Iron, Louis XIV Period"
Beautiful object, forged steel, gunsmith quality composed of a stamp forming the base of a wax case, to seal sealed letters.
This model is beautiful and simple, scalloped handle, cut on 8 sides, to store sealing wax. It opens with hinge, (nicely cut) by a push latch, actuated by powerful spring. Octagonal top is not engraved, because it was not a personal seal. Base forms a round seal, showing the emblem of an auxiliary bishop, (after Diderot/d'Alembert: Art Heraldique, plate XIII, ) the coat of arms shows a drawbridge on azure background, possibly the city of Carcassonne.
Good condition, the previous owner polished it a little, the spring works, some wear and small surface flaws, engraved coat of arms is superb…. 9.6cm x 2cm, Look closely at our photos.
