Living and playing Carl Ludwig Scheins, who grew up in Auchen, moved to Düsseldorf at a young age, where he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. In the years 1830-1837 he specialized in landscape painting and followed the master class of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer.[1] He belongs to the circle of the Düsseldorf painting school, as mentioned in 1836 by the archivist and writer Johann Josef Scotti[2] and later by Wolfgang Müller von Königswinter in his Düsseldorf art album. His landscapes are complemented by people and animals who, as if by chance, carry out their specific activities at the time of the painting's creation and thus enliven the image without being significantly in the foreground.[4] Nevertheless, many of his works, notably the winter landscapes[5], exude a certain melancholy in their overall impression thanks to the clever use of various lighting elements, as described by Wolfgang Müller.
