"Michel Zadounaisky, Art Deco 1930, Pair Of Wrought Iron Columns With Snakes"
Michel Zadounaisky (1903-1983) Exceptional and rare pair of cylindrical columns in solid mahogany set in a circular base with four uprights in hammered wrought iron. The upper part presents an open sphere in red and gold lacquered sheet metal from which escape eight snakes intertwined in beaten wrought iron. Each piece signed, hot, intaglio, Zadounaisky. Period circa 1930 Height: 177 cm Base diameter: 30 cm Spheres diameter: 25 cm Width of the snakes: 41 cm Height of the snakes: 34 cm Provenance: private collection Michel Zadounaisky, famous ironworker sculptor from Lyon. He is considered one of the rare ironworkers to have encountered wrought iron as a sculptor and not only as a craftsman. BIBLIOGRAPHY: At the beginning of the 1930s, Michel Zadounaisky produced several works on the theme of the snake. The pieces presented are strongly reminiscent of those described by Thierry Roche: "For an enlightened amateur, he executed in 1931, a door for a collector's cabinet entitled "The Prisoner". On either side of it, perched on austere saddles, vases are arranged from which handfuls of snakes escape, like the hair of the Gorgons seeming to deny access to any visitor.
