Auguste Lançon studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and completed his studies in Paris. He became an animal sculptor out of admiration for the works of Antoine-Louis Barye. Lançon exhibited his work for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1861, and continued to do so until 1870. During the Franco-Prussian War, he was a sergeant in a battalion. Linked to the Paris Commune, he was imprisoned for six months. On his release, he changed his first name to Auguste Lançon. He became a military painter and took part in the Balkan War in 1877. He engraved several etchings showing scenes of war he had witnessed, including an essay by Eugène Véron (1876) and for L'Eau forte en six gravures (1874-1881) published by Alfred Cadart1. In 1893, rue Auguste-Lançon in Paris (13th arrondissement) was named in his honour. His perfectly preserved artist's studio still exists in the house where he was born, in Saint-Claude, 3 rue du Collège.
