It was in 1925 that the Holophane glassworks located in Les Andelys in the Eure department in France, specializing in the manufacture of optical glass and lenses for lighthouses and beacons, opened an art glassworks department under the Verlys brand (contraction of Verrerie des Andelys). The first creations will be objects in tinted glass which will give way in 1933 to the production of pressed molded glass whose level of perfection and mastery of manufacturing, especially in opalescence, will have nothing to envy of the most illustrious houses of the era such as Sabino or Lalique. It is not by chance that the Verlys brand has attached itself to illustrious creators such as Pierre d'Avesn who worked at Verlys between 1937 and 1940. The Holophane house will cease its artistic production of the Verlys brand in 1946 to keep only its industrial headlight lens department.
