"Henri Jacob, Lyre Armchair From Louis XVI Period End Of 18th Century"
Henri JACOB (1753-1824) Armchair with lyre back Ivory lacquered and waxed beech Paris, Louis XVI period H. 90; 57; 50 cm Rare armchair with lyre back, with beautiful proportions. It rests on tapered fluted legs, the horseshoe belt (rare and a sign of quality) with molded decoration, the backrest decorated with a lyre, the armrest consoles garnished with geometric decoration at the backrest level. The entire seat is fully doweled. The model, by the elegance of the proportions, the connection to the backrest, the general decor of the seat can be returned to its author Henri Jacob. An identical armchair stamped by the Master was found in the Art store. We can point out another pair of seats sold at Sotheby's with this geometric recess in the backrest, very characteristic of Henri Jacob. Henri Jacob First cousin of the famous cabinetmaker Georges Jacob obtained his master's degree in 1779 and settled on rue de Bourbon-Villeneuve before moving in 1799 and establishing his workshop on rue de l'Echiquier. He ceased his activity in 1806. Thanks to his certain talent and the quality of his works but especially because of the similarity of the names, he very quickly enjoyed great notoriety. His production of chairs is very similar to that of his cousin, most of whose models he shamelessly copies. The sons of Georges Jacob also published an article in the Posters, Announcements and Miscellaneous Notices of April 6, 1800 "The Jacob brothers warn their customers against any confusion between their store and that of Henri Jacob, rue de l' Chessboard" From 1785 he obtained orders from the Court and manufactured classic Louis XVI seats in gilded wood. Its most important production consists of Louis XVI seats, but especially Directoire and Consulate, in mahogany, with sculptures of great finesse. Henri Jacob left behind beautiful creations, of very good quality, but most often plagiarized from those of his famous cousin. Its establishment disappeared at the beginning of the Empire. Condition report The armchair has been completely restored by our workshop. The trim is made in the traditional way with horsehair. Upholstered with a beautiful Lyonnais velvet.
