Antoine Chartres (1903-1968)
French painter born January 2, 1903 in Lyon and died June 29, 1968 in the same
city. A former student of the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon, he was a professor
at the Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Known for his landscapes, which are said to be tinged with drama, Antoine Chartres creates
part of the Les Nouveaux group.
From 1926, his works were presented in independent exhibitions at
Lyon and at the Salon d’Automne in Paris. From 1933 to 1943, he also exhibited at the Salon
of the Tuileries. He then participated in exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon.
and the Paul Dini museum in Villefranche-sur-Saône.

Yes ! Antoine Chartres undoubtedly contributed to liberating artists linked to
the adventure of plastic arts in Lyon. First influenced by his elders in the group
Ziniar, he will adopt the Cézanne manner, extending the discovery of
modernity, then, confronted with the "Parisian pictorial revolutions" which clashed
the Bonnardizing spirit of Marius Mermillon, he will amply destructure his
compositions, then acting in an “Abstract Landscape” close to Hayden or
Sima.
After an unjust stay in purgatory, he now occupies his true place on the
front of the stage of this adventure of the plastic arts which fascinate a number
growing number of French collectors.
