Painter with varied talents, Louis-Joseph Pottin was a student of Carolus-Duran. His artistic career really seems to begin around 1880, when he exhibited his first portrait at the Salon. Many others will follow, but also landscapes and still lifes.
Our canvas is part of a series of studio views that the painter produced throughout his career, perhaps illustrating his own works or those of painter friends. Is this a composition made in his own studio? Or that of this woman seated to the right of the painting?
