"Antwerp 1657-58, Wine Beaker In Sterling Silver, Beker"
Extremely rare Christe ing Beaker from the seventeenth century with the hallmark of the city of Antwerp. It is struck with the clearly legible crowned B vintage hallmark for the year 1757. The goldsmith's hallmark has the shape of a rodent in an oval cartridge. (A beaver?) A pair of candlesticks from 1663 by the same goldsmith is listed in the treasure of the Saint-Jean church in Mechelen. The Beaker is engraved with the name Judocus van Wonterghem and the year 1687. I have added a screenshot of a genealogical site which reports the birth of a man with this name in 1687 in Deinze which could well have been his owner during part of the existence of this beautiful object. The Beaker is in a remarkable state of conservation given its 366 years of existence. Beakers with hallmarks from Flemish towns dating from before 1700 are extremely rare. It weighs 120 grams
