Canvas size 50*61 cm and 78*68 cm with frame Biography: Edmond Guillain was born in 1931 in Comines, in the North of France, where light and landscapes would play a major role in the artist's painting. He painted his first painting at just thirteen years old “Poplars on the banks of the Helpe”. He initially studied at the Beaux Arts in Lille, then at the prestigious Saint Luc school in Tournai in Belgium (Flemish expressionism intrinsically disrupted his work, influenced and nourished him throughout his career). He was a student of Speybrouck, himself a student of Constant Permeke, one of the major figures of Flemish expressionism. From 1979 Edmond Guillain decided to devote himself exclusively to his art, and undertook a long series of trips in France and around the world. In 1954, the year of his military service, he discovered Morocco, which he painted repeatedly throughout his work. His palette evolves as he discovers around the world. At ease wherever he is, he knows how to accurately render the light, atmosphere and tones of the most diverse landscapes. He perceives and paints the massive character of the cliffs of our coasts, the finesse of the Venetian city, the dazzling light of Spain or Greece, the heat of Morocco, but also Vietnam, Central America, India , Ireland... His touch adapts but remains frank, direct, it never hides under artifice or effects. In flat areas, in broad strokes, or sometimes lighter, his painting is thick and shiny, we feel the material on the canvas, it is the nature of the painting, in the same way that the landscape or the subject is synthesized to reflect the the very essence of what the painter has before his eyes at the precise moment when he transcribes it on his canvas. In 1999, one of his works was acquired by the Royal Museum of Tournai in Belgium. The painter met Christian Dazy in 1989. From then on, his works occupied a major place on the walls of the Christian Dazy and Lorella Santiago Galleries.
