Venus de Milo on base
Bronze with patina and varnish
Dimensions : H. 29 (cm.)
France, late 19th century
Smaller Venus de Milo on a plinth with rich mouldings.
These pieces were very widely produced at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the democratisation of the process for reducing works of art, and also to the Parisian expertise of the bronze workshops.
The style of the Venus de Milo
The style is not uniform. In the upper part, the barely expressive face is marked by classicism, as is the modelling of the nude parts without breaks or shadow effects. In the lower part, on the other hand, the folds of the drapery are very graphic and visually outweigh the shape of the legs. This disparity has led some to think that the lower part could be a late antique restoration. In fact, it reflects a desire to create a strong contrast between the nude and the drapery. The combination of these very marked stylistic effects with a return to classicism characterises the taste of the Hellenistic period.
