Gouache on paper by Eugène Viala (1869 Salles-Curan, Aveyron-1913, Salles-Curan) French painter, engraver, poet and writer.
Eugène Viala studied at the art school in Montpellier from 1877 to 1880, then in Paris at the Académie Julian under the mastership of Jacques Edmond Leman and Ernest Hébért in 1881. Settled in Rodez he was helped by Maurice Fenaille who also sponsored Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel. He was keen in painting the very particular atmosphere of the landsapes of his native area, Aveyron.
Works by him are kept in Museum of San Francisco, Paris library of the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art et département des estampes de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Rodez Musée Denis Puech, Toulouse Musée Paul Dupuy.
