"Works Of Nicolas Boileau Despréaux 5 Vol. In8 Bound In Blond Calfskin Back à La Grotesque 1772"
Exceptional copy in 5 large volumes in 8, full blond calf, ribbon-framed boards, interior lace, spine decorated with grotesque gilded irons, titles and volume numbers in olive green morocco, gilded edges, marbled endpapers, ex libris from the Library of Count of .... Works of Boileau despréaux, With Historical Clarifications given by himself, & written by M. Brossette; increased by several Parts, both from the Author and relating to his Works; with Remarks & Critical Dissertations by M. De Saint-Marc. New Edition, Augmented with several Notes & Parts relating to the Author's Works. Enriched with Figures engraved after the drawings of the famous Picart the Roman. In Paris at the Libraires Associés in 1772. Illustrated with five beautiful vignettes on the two-color titles, a frontispiece by Picart engraved by Winkeles, two allegorical figures by van der Meer (the Epistle and Art Poétique), and six figures after Picart re-engraved by Winkeles for the Lectern, four title vignettes by van der Meer and one by F. de Bakker. This edition was also published in Amsterdam, by Changuion. Picart's figures were taken from the Editio of 1718. They are printed on strong paper. Fresh copy, with large margins. After the large edition of Boileau's Works published in 1718 in folio format and in the face of success, the beautiful editions of this Author followed one another in 1722, 1729, 1745, with variants. This latest Edition, well printed, whose subtle typographic variations are reminiscent of the reduction of a folio, has been revised, and the spelling has been modernized; the pamphlet Boileau grappling with the Jesuits was restored, and a life of the Author was added. Finally, we cannot overemphasize the critical quality of this edition which includes the abundant and judicious remarks and comments of Saint-Marc from the 1745 edition. A beauty and rarity in almost new condition, rare in this condition
