Parquet Globe - Wood - J. Newton - England - 19th Century flag

Object description :

"Parquet Globe - Wood - J. Newton - England - 19th Century"
Parquet globe. Sphere resting on a divided meridian ring on brass, resting on a molded mahogany tripod foot carved with windings and waves. The globe is signed "NEWTON'S New and Improved TERRESTRIAL GLOBE Accurately delineated from the observations of the most esteemed NAVIGATORS AND TRAVELERS to the Present Time Manufactured by NEWTON & SON, 66 Chancery Lane & 3 Fleet St. Temple Bar Published 1st January 1842". The interests of this beautiful globe from the Napoleonic era are multiple, since it names the sea between Korea and Japan "Gulf of Corea" and reports the latest discoveries of the 19th century: the islands north of Canada by Captain Parry in 1819-1820, the explorations of Lieutenant Anjon in northern Siberia from 1821 to 23, the expedition to the American polar circle by Franklin in 1827 - without forgetting the discovery of the "Clarks" rock in the Pacific off the Sandwich Islands in 1822. The latest discoveries date from 1831-33 of Adélie land by Dumont d'Urville, and from 1841 of Victoria land by Sir James Ross, in which he located Mount Erebus, a volcano in full activity. All of these discoveries constitute what we call the Antarctic lands. England 19th century To restore (see photos)
