Italy, Bologna. Early 18th century.
This representation is uncommon, seated but with a dominant posture, looking down at the world from the heavens, clutching the orb against his hip. The little finger of the left foot is missing.
Applique sculpture, it is not all faces.
The orb is a sphere surmounted by a cross, which has disappeared here. As a Christian symbol, its spherical shape symbolizes the temporal - and not only spiritual - domination of Christ over the world. In Western iconography, from the 15th century, the image of Christ carrying the orb in his hand receives the name Salvator Mundi (savior of the world).
