In 1905, the Moreau family settled in Brussels. His father took his son with him very early on to the cabarets and theaters of the capital. As a teenager, Max Moreau frequented museums, he reproduced works by great Masters like Velasquez or Frans Hals. He continued to frequent theaters and produced a significant number of portraits of artists. In 1920, the family moved to Paris. Naturally, he attended the Comédie-Française there where he became friends with Denis d'Inès, of whom he produced more than 110 portraits in different theatrical roles. In 1923, Max Moreau returned to Brussels, where he completed his military service. His talents as a painter, put at the service of several officers, allowed him to carry out military service which was not difficult and flexible in terms of leave. In 1928, he married Félicie Leclercq, known as Félia Notes. In 1929, he began a long series of trips. At each of these stages, he frequented the theaters and produced works which he distributed more and more easily among the local bourgeoisie. He made five long stays in Tunisia from 1929 to 1938 during which he discovered the light of the Maghreb, a significant fact in his painting. In 1932, he staged one of his plays in Tunis, with the Essor troupe. It is a tragi-comic play: “Tutus” in which he plays the leading role. It is a success. In 1933 and 1934, he exhibited at the Tunisian Salon during his stays. In 1943, he exhibited at the Salon d'Hiver in Paris two portraits of a doctor and illustrations for the poem "L'Apothicaire lyrique". In 1946, he lived for a while in Nice before the couple settled in 1947 in Morocco, in Marrakech. They met there in particular with General Juin and his wife, the painter Jacques Majorelle, as well as the colonial bourgeoisie. In 1950, they moved to Paris and in March 1951, Max Moreau exhibited his major works brought from Morocco at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in Paris. In June 1954, Max Moreau sent ten paintings to the Salon de l'Armée, without any dealing with a military subject, apart from the portraits of General Juin who had become Marshal and his wife. In October 1954, the painter left alone to try his luck in New York, coached by Mrs Doane. After having garnered quite a few commissions for portraits of the gentry, his wife joined him at the beginning of February 1955. From 1956 to 1960, he returned four times to the United States, mainly to Palm Beach, where his portraits of the jet set earned him a lot of money. In October 1960, he exhibited at the Wildenstein Gallery in New York. In 1965, Max Moreau bought the carmen de los Géranios, then abandoned, in Granada in the Albayzin district, in 1966, after renovation work on the carmen (house with patio typical of the Albayzin district), the couple settled permanently in Granada. From 1966 to 1981, Max Moreau had nine personal exhibitions in Spain, mainly in Granada, and four personal exhibitions in Belgium. From 1982, Parkinson's disease increasingly and definitively diminished the faculties of the painter who would never exhibit again. Max Moreau died in Grenada on September 2, 1992.
